Abstract
An improved rongeur for cutting bone or cartilage comprising two shaft members capable of reciprocating motion relative to each other wherein one shaft member terminates in a foot plate and the other shaft member comprises a combined cutting element and storage member is disclosed. The combined cutting element and storage member has a cutting edge at its distal end and a storage chamber proximate the cutting edge for collecting and storing cut pieces of bone or cartilage in an amount greater than the maximum bone or cartilage capable of being cut in a single full cut. The combined cutting element and storage member is truly disposable, rather than merely replaceable and requires the use of no tools or special assembly. The rongeur may be manually activated or activated by a solenoid and powered by a battery.
Claims39
An electrical rongeur for cutting bone or cartilage, comprising:
- first and second longitudinally extending shafts capable of reciprocating motion relative to each other, said first shaft terminating in a first jaw portion and said second shaft terminating in a second jaw portion, said first and second jaw portions being in cooperating relationship for cutting bone or cartilage, said second jaw portion adapted to store cut pieces of bone or cartilage in an amount greater than the maximum bone or cartilage capable of being cut in a single cut by said electrical rongeur;
- and
- a primary solenoid assembly for activating said reciprocating motion of said first shaft relative to said second shaft whereby said first and second jaw portions close upon activation of said primary solenoid assembly by a primary switch.
A rongeur for cutting bone or cartilage, comprising:
- a body, said body having a handle portion:
- first and second longitudinally parallel shafts capable of reciprocal motion relative to each other, said first shaft terminating distally in a footplate having a first sharpened cutting surface, said footplate being removeably attachable to a proximal portion of said first shaft;
- said second shaft terminating in a second sharpened cutting surface, said second sharpened cutting surface being removeably attachable to a proximal portion of said second shaft;
- whereby the reciprocal motion of said first and second shafts relative to each other brings the first and second sharpened cutting surfaces in opposition to each other to cut bone and cartilage;
- a primary solenoid assembly for activating said reciprocating motion of said first shaft relative to said second shaft where said first and second jaw portions close upon activation of said primary solenoid assembly by a primary switch;
- and
- a secondary solenoid assembly for moving at least one of said first and second desired, said secondary solenoid assembly being activated by a secondary switch.
