Abstract
A number of new therapeutic uses have been found for compounds such as known local anesthetics which are quite different from the present therapeutic uses of these drugs. The uses include, for example; modulating lymphocytes, macrophages and other immune cell functions, or PMN functions; inhibiting the cytotoxic effect of polymorphonuclear neutrophils leucocytes; providing a protective effect on plasma cell membranes; and providing an antidote against intoxication by an intoxicants.
Claims21
A method of providing a protective effect on plasma cell membranes in an animal in order to avoid cellular damage and to prevent the deleterious effect of diverse injuries caused by a viral infection or an immunodeficiency syndrome of non-viral etiology, the method comprising administering to the animal an effective amount of lidocaine hydrochloride (xylocaine) said amount provides a protective effect on plasma cell membranes, wherein said viral infection caused by a virus is selected from the group consisting of:
- rotavirus, parvovirus, enterovirus, rhinovirus, calicivirus, aphtovirus, coronavirus, papovavirus, adenovirus, viral hepatitis A, and infectious bursal disease virus (gumboro);
- and said immunodeficiency syndrome of non-viral etiology is acute hemorrhagic diarrhea.
