Abstract
The present invention relates to a novel platinum palladium alloy catalyst useful in hydrofinishing and hydrocracking non low sulfur content feedstock and the process of hydrofinishing and hydrocracking such non low sulfur content feedstock feeds. The catalyst maintains the activity of a palladium catalyst with the sulfur tolerance of a platinum catalyst without the need for the higher reaction temperatures normally associated with platinum based catalysts and thus avoid the higher rates of undesirable cracking reactions in the fabrication of a lubricating base oil stock.
Claims26
A lube hydrotreating process comprising contacting a lubricating oil base stock and hydrogen at hydrotreating reaction conditions in a hydrotreating reaction zone with a catalyst comprising a platinum-palladium alloy and an oxide matrix, wherein the platinum to palladium molar ratio in the alloy is between about 2.5:1 to about 1:2.5 to produce a hydrotreated effluent comprising a hydrotreated lube oil, wherein the lubricating oil base stock has a normal boiling point in the range from about 600.degree. F. to about 1,050.degree. F. and a viscosity index of at least about 90, and wherein at least a portion of the hydrotreated lube oil is charged to a catalytic dewaxer.
An integrated process for producing a lube oil from a petroleum feedstock containing sulfur comprising:
- a) upgrading the petroleum feedstock to produce a lubricating oil base stock having a normal boiling point within the range of about 650.degree. F. to about 1050.degree. F., a sulfur content of less than about 200 ppm and a viscosity index of at least about 80;
- b) contacting at least a portion of the lubricating oil base stock and hydrogen in a hydrotreating reaction zone with a catalyst comprising a platinum-palladium alloy and an oxide matrix, wherein molar ratio of platinum to palladium in the alloy is between about 2.5:1 and about 1:2.5, at a temperature in the range of between about 625.degree. F. to about 750.degree. F., for form a hydrotreated lube oil base stock;
- c) charging the hydrotreated lube oil to a catalytic dewaxer to form a dewaxed lube oil base stock;
- and
- d) contacting at least a portion of the dewaxed lube oil base stock with hydrogen in a hydrotreating reaction zone with a catalyst comprising a platinum-palladium alloy and an oxide matrix, wherein the molar ratio of platinum to palladium in the alloy is between about 2.5:1 and about 1:2.5, at a temperature in the range of between about 400.degree. F. and about 625.degree. F., to form a finished lube oil.
