Abstract
An apparatus and method for protecting hardware devices using a spiral inductor. The surge suppressor protects hardware devices from electric surges by isolating the radio frequency from an inner conductor. The surge suppressor includes a housing, an inner conductor, a surge blocking device, and a spiral inductor. The surge blocking device is inserted in series with the hardware devices for blocking the flow of electrical energy therethrough. The spiral inductor is coupled to the surge blocking device and is shunted to ground for discharging the electrical surge.
Claims24
A surge suppressor comprising:
- a conductor configured to propagate a signal;
- and
- an inductor having a spiral configuration, the inductor coupled to the conductor and configured to dissipate electrical energy to a ground.
A surge suppressor comprising:
- a housing having a cavity;
- a conductor configured to receive a signal, the conductor disposed within the cavity of the housing;
- and
- an inductor having an inner spiral and an outer spiral, the inner spiral coupled with the conductor and the outer spiral coupled with the housing, the inductor configured to discharge electrical energy to the housing.
A method of determining the inductance of an inductor having a spiral configuration for use in a surge suppressor, the method comprising:
- determining a lower frequency limit;
- determining a desired impedance;
- calculating a cutoff frequency by dividing the lower frequency limit by a prescribed constant;
- determining an initial value for the inductance;
- determining a cavity dimension;
- determining inductor constraints;
- and
- measuring an inductance value.
A surge suppressor comprising:
- means for propagating a signal and a surge;
- and
- means coupled to the means for propagating, for discharging the surge to a ground connection.
