A process for the removal of surface layers from workpieces, the process including the steps of providing a processing head that exhibits focusing optics (10), providing a beam deflection apparatus that emits a laser beam (12), and connecting said processing head to a laser apparatus that produces a laser beam so as to feed in light, characterized by the fact that the process is undertaken for the purpose of de-scaling non-rusting steel that has a layer of scale from hot rolling with an intensity of about 10.sup.6 to 10.sup.7 W/cm.sup.2, given an energy density of about 100 J/cm.sup.2 on the surface of the workpiece and a scale layer 3 to 15 um, in course of which protective gas is directed at an irradiated area of the surface of the work piece.
