A system is disclosed for inhibiting the corrosion of ferrous and other metals by passivating the metals. The system includes novel buffered compositions which may be applied to metal products, and novel combinations thereof with metals, for preventing or retarding corrosion, as well as methods for applying the buffered compositions to metal products, such that corrosion protection of the products is achieved. The methods include an in-situ application to existing structures with metal reinforcement as well as applications to metal products during manufacture. Generally, the compositions may be in various forms and comprise one or more layers, at least one of which includes a water repellent but water vapor permeable carrier component and one or more pH buffer components. The buffer is selected to produce a passivating pH at the surface of the metal. The compositions are environmentally friendly and are capable of replacing chromates which have been traditionally used with zinc and zinc alloys to inhibit corrosion of metals but which are potentially harmful to the environment.
A method of inhibiting the corrosion of a cable containing multiple metal wires which comprises covering the wires with a gel comprising at least one synthetic oil and at least one silicate buffer material that buffers to a pH at which the metal wires have a natural passivity to corrosion.
A cable containing a plurality of metal strands and a rust inhibitor in the interstices between the strands and covering the strands, said rust inhibitor comprising a thixotropic gel comprising a carrier comprising at least one synthetic oil and particles of at least one alkali metal buffer material buffering the gel to a pH at which the metal strands have a natural passivity to corrosion.
A corrosion protecting coating on a metal wire comprising a water repellant but water vapor permeable carrier material comprising at least one synthetic oil and adapted to cover the metal wire and comprising at least one silicate buffer material capable of buffering the metal wire to a pII at which the metal wire has a natural passivity to corrosion, and a close fitting liquid water impermeable coating covering the carrier material.
A wire product comprising a metal surface plated with a metal comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of zinc, zinc alloy, zinc alloy containing chromate and a zinc alloy containing a chromate conversion film;
A corrosion resistant metal wire product comprising multiple metal wires and a thixotropic gel comprising at least one synthetic oil carrier, at least 20 to 45 wt. % of at least one liquid or particulate silicate, and a microbiological growth inhibitor.
