Abstract
Growth differentiation factor-8 (GDF-8) is disclosed along with its polynucleotide sequence and amino acid sequence. Also disclosed are diagnostic and therapeutic methods of using the GDF-8 polypeptide and polynucleotide sequences.

An antibody specifically reactive with growth differentiation factor-8 (GDF-8) polypeptide or an epitope thereof, said GDF-8 polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:

A method of detecting growth differentiation factor-8 (GDF-8) in a sample, comprising:
- contacting the sample with an antibody specifically reactive with a GDF-8 polypeptide or an epitope thereof, said GDF-8 polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:
- 12 or SEQ ID NO:
- 14;
- and
- detecting binding of the antibody to GDF-8, thereby detecting GDF-8 in the sample.
