Abstract
To improve the consumption resistance and lifetime, a spark plug for an internal combustion engine comprises: an insulation porcelain having a throughhole; a center electrode held at one end of the throughhole; a housing holding the insulation porcelain; a ground electrode disposed at an front end of the housing and facing the center electrode; a spark gap defined by the center electrode and the ground electrode; and at least one of the center electrode and the ground electrode having a noble metal chip bonded to a discharging spot of an front end thereof, wherein the noble metal chip consisting of an Ir-Rh alloy contains Rh in an amount of from 1 wt % to 60 wt %.
Claims22
A spark plug for an internal combustion engine, comprising:
- an insulation porcelain having a throughhole;
- a center electrode held at one end of the throughhole;
- a housing holding the insulation porcelain;
- a ground electrode at a front end of the housing and facing the center electrode;
- a spark gap defined by the center electrode and the ground electrode;
- and
- at least one of the center electrode and the ground electrode having a noble metal member bonded to a discharging spot of a front end thereof so as to be in a position to be in direct exposure to a combustion gas, wherein the noble metal member comprises 90 wt % or more of an Ir-Rh alloy containing Rh in an amount of from 3 wt % to 30 wt %.
A spark plug for an internal combustion engine, comprising:
- an insulation porcelain having a throughhole;
- a center electrode held at one end of the throughhole;
- a housing holding the insulation porcelain;
- a ground electrode disposed at a front end of the housing and facing the center electrode;
- a spark gap defined by the center electrode and the ground electrode;
- and
- at least one of the center electrode and the ground electrode having a noble metal member bonded to a discharging spot of a front end thereof, wherein the noble metal member consists of an alloy containing at least Ir and Rh as essential elements with Ir in the largest amount and Rh in the second largest amount, the Rh amount being 3 wt % to 30 wt %.
A spark plug comprising:
- a central electrode;
- an insulator provided exterior to the central electrode;
- a main metallic shell provided exterior to the insulator;
- a ground electrode coupled to one end of the main metallic shell and having another end facing the central electrode;
- and
- an igniting portion secured to at least one of the central electrode and the ground electrode and forming a spark discharge gap;
- wherein the igniting portion includes an Ir-based alloy including Rh in an amount ranging from 3 wt % to 30 wt %.
A spark plug for an internal combustion engine, comprising:
- an insulation porcelain having a throughhole;
- a center electrode held at one end of the throughhole;
- a housing holding the insulation porcelain;
- a ground electrode disposed at a front end of the housing and facing the center electrode;
- a spark gap defined by the center electrode and the ground electrode;
- and
- at least one of the center electrode and the ground electrode having a noble metal member bonded to a discharging spot of a front end thereof so as to be in a position to be in direct exposure to a combustion gas, wherein the noble metal member consisting of an Ir-Rh alloy contains Rh in an amount of from 1 wt % to 60 wt %, and further wherein the Ir-Rh alloy further contains an oxide of an element of the group 3A or 4A of the periodic table in an amount of from 0.5 wt % to 5 wt %.
