Abstract
A completely implantable apparatus is provided for treatment of tissue surrounding a cavity left by surgical removal of a brain tumor. The apparatus includes an inflatable balloon constructed for placement in the cavity. A subcutaneously implantable treatment fluid receptacle is provided for receiving a transdermal injection of a treatment fluid. A catheter connects the receptacle to the inflatable balloon. Various embodiments provide for simultaneous application of heat therapy and/or radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy to the remaining tissue surrounding the cavity from which the tumor was removed.
Claims34
An apparatus for placement in a body cavity in a patient, said apparatus comprising:
- a balloon having an inflated state in which a treatment fluid fills said balloon and a deflated state in which said treatment fluid is evacuated from said balloon, said balloon being adapted, in its inflated state, to fit into said cavity;
- a catheter for delivery of said treatment fluid into said balloon;
- and
- an external energy transmitter for transmitting energy into said balloon.
A method for treating tissue lining a body cavity in a patient, said method comprising the steps of:
- inserting an inflatable balloon into said body cavity;
- inflating said balloon with a treatment fluid, thereby placing said treatment fluid in proximity with said tissue;
- transmitting energy into said balloon for heating said treatment fluid.
