Abstract
The present invention comprises passing a solution of a soluble material, preferably a protein, in a solvent through a continuum of supercritical antisolvent fluid and precipitating the soluble material. This can be conducted by passing the solution through the continuum of supercrital fluid in the form of droplets, which can be sprayed through the supercritical fluid. The plurality of droplets can be passed cocurrently or countercurrently with respect to a stream of antisolvent fluid. Alternatively, the solution can be passed through the continuum of supercritical antisolvent fluid in the form of a thin film or a plurality of fine streams.
Claims9
A method of forming dry protein particles having an equivalent diameter of less than 5 .mu.m with a narrow particle distribution which comprises bringing droplets of a liquid solution of the protein in a solvent for said protein, the droplets having diameters of from 10 .mu.m to 500 .mu.m, into contact at a controlled rate with an excess of a supercritical antisolvent having low solvent power for said protein but operable to dissolve in and expand said liquid solution and precipitate the dry protein particles.
A method of forming dry protein particles having an equivalent diameter of less than 5 .mu.m with a narrow particle distribution which comprises bringing droplets of a liquid solution of the protein in a solvent for said protein, the droplets having diameters of from 10 .mu.m to 500 .mu.m, into contact at a controlled rate without change in pressure with an excess of a supercritical antisolvent having low solvent power for said protein but operable to dissolve in and expand said liquid solution and precipitate the dry protein particles.
