Abstract
A polyester polymer and method for making the polyester, wherein the polyester is prepared by (1) combining in a reactor a monomer containing a diacid moiety; a monomer comprising a diol moiety; and a monomer containing an isosorbide moiety; with a condensation catalyst suitable for condensing aromatic diacids and diols; and (2) heating the monomers and catalyst to polymerize the monomers to yield a polyester having an inherent viscosity of at least about 0.15 dL/g.
Claims36
A method for making a polyester polymer comprising:
- (1) combining in a reactor one or more monomers comprising a diacid moiety;
- a monomer comprising an isosorbide moiety;
- and one or more monomers comprising another diol moiety;
- with a condensation catalyst suitable for condensing diacids and diols;
- and
- (2) heating said monomers and said catalyst to a temperature sufficient to polymerize said monomers into a polyester polymer having at least said diacid moieties, said isosorbide moieties and said other diol moieties;
- wherein said heating is continued for a sufficient time to yield an isotropic polyester having an inherent viscosity of at least about 0.15 dL/g when measured as a 1% (weight/volume) solution of said polyester in o-chlorophenol at a temperature of 25.degree. C. and with the proviso that when said one or more monomers comprising a diacid moiety is terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate, said one or more monomers comprising another diol moiety is not ethylene glycol or is ethylene glycol and a different diol.
An isotropic polyester comprising diacid moieties, isosorbide moieties, and one or more other diol moieties, wherein said polyester has an inherent viscosity of at least about 0.15 dL/g when measured as a 1% (weight/volume) solution of said polyester in o-chlorophenol at a temperature of 25.degree. C. and with the proviso that when said diacid moieties are derived from terephthaloyl, said one or more other diol moieties is not derived from ethylene glycol or is derived from ethylene glycol and another diol.
