Abstract
Disclosed is a method of preparing a compound represented by the following structural formula: ##STR1## The method comprises reacting bromine (Br.sub.2) and an aliphatic organic acid with a compound represented by the following structural formula: ##STR2## R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently a hydroxyl protecting group.

A method of preparing a compound represented by the following structural formula:
- ##STR18## comprising reacting a precursor compound represented by the following structural formula:
- ##STR19## with reagents consisting essentially of Br2 or I2 and an aliphatic organic acid in an etheral solvent, wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 arc each independently a benzyl or substituted benzyl group:
- and
- R.sub.3 is --Br or --I.

The method of claime 1, wherein the precursor compound is reacted with Br.sub.2 and an aliphatic organic acid is an etheral solvent and R.sub.3 is --Br.
