Abstract
Weights are disposed on opposite sides of a base member, and selector rods are selectively moved into engagement with the desired number of weights on each side of the base member. The resulting adjustable resistance assembly may be used on dumbbells and/or weight stacks.
Claims25
A method of making an apparatus which provides adjustable resistance to exercise, comprising the steps of:
- disposing weights on opposite first and second sides of a base member;
- movably mounting first and second bars on the base member in such a manner that the first bar is movable in a first direction relative to the base member and into engagement with a desired number of the weights on the first side of the base member, and the second bar is movable in a second, opposite direction relative to the base member and into engagement with a desired number of the weights on the second side of the base member;
- and
- constraining the first bar and the second bar to move together in opposite directions.
1 more element
An exercise apparatus, comprising:
- a base member which is movable in response to application of force by a user;
- weights disposed on opposite first and second sides of the base member and secured against horizontal movement relative to the base member;
- and
- first and second bars mounted on the base member and constrained to move together in opposite horizontal directions to engage a desired number of weights on respective sides of the base member and thereby prevent relative vertical movement of the weights relative to the base member.

A method of making an apparatus which provides adjustable resistance to exercise, comprising the steps of:
- disposing weights on opposite first and second sides of a base member;
- movably mounting first and second bars on the base member in such a manner that the first bar is movable in a first direction relative to the base member and into engagement with a desired number of the weights on the first side of the base member, and the second bar is movable in a second, opposite direction relative to the base member and into engagement with a desired number of the weights on the second side of the base member;
- providing an upwardly opening groove in each of the weights on the first side of the base member to accommodate the second bar;
- and
- providing an upwardly opening groove in each of the weights on the second side of the base member to accommodate the first bar.
