Abstract
A two-step adsorption process for producing ordered organic/inorganic multilayer structures is provided. Multilayered films are formed on metallic and nonmetallic substrates by alternate adsorption of a cationic polyelectrolyte and anionic sheets of a silicate clay. The two-step adsorption process is not only fast but allows also for preparation of multilayer elements of thicknesses greater than about 2200 Angstroms on silicon, and greater than about 1500 Angstroms on gold, silver, and copper.
Claims23
Method for the stepwise preparation of a multilayer structure, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a substrate having a surface capable of adsorbing an organic ionic material;
- (b) depositing an organic ionic material onto the surface of the substrate whereby the organic ionic material is adsorbed onto the substrate surface;
- (c) rinsing the layer of the organic ionic material adsorbed on the substrate surface;
- (d) drying the rinsed layer of the organic ionic material adsorbed on the substrate surface;
- (e) depositing an ionic inorganic material of an opposite charge to that of the organic ionic material onto the layer of the organic ionic material adsorbed on the substrate;
- (f) rinsing the layer of adsorbed inorganic ionic material of the opposite charge;
- and
- (g) drying of the rinsed layer of inorganic ionic material of opposite charge.
Method for the stepwise preparation of a multilayer structure comprising at least one layer of a cationic organic material alternating with at least one layer of a anionic inorganic material by sequential rapid adsorption, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a substrate for the layered structure having a surface capable of adsorbing a cationic organic material;
- (b) depositing an aqueous solution of a cationic organic material on the surface of the substrate so that the cationic organic material is adsorbed on the substrate surface to form a layer of organic material;
- (c) rinsing the adsorbed layer of cationic organic material;
- (d) drying the layer of adsorbed cationic organic material;
- (e) depositing an aqueous dispersion of an anionic inorganic material onto the layer of cationic organic material so as to adsorb a layer of anionic inorganic material on the organic layer;
- (f) rinsing of the layer of inorganic material adsorbed onto the layer of organic material;
- and
- (g) drying of the rinsed layer of of inorganic material.
