Abstract
A spinal implant for intervertebral disc replacement. The implant is formed from two hemicylindrical elements, each engaging one of an adjacent pair of vertebrae. An articulating ball-and-socket joint between the two elements resists compression and lateral movement between the vertebrae, but allows pivotal movement, thereby preserving mobility. Fusion chambers are provided for allowing bone ingrowth to fuse the elements to the vertebrae. Biocompatible, bioreabsorbable struts, shims, fillers and/or end caps are provided for temporary stabilization of the first and second hemicylindrical elements. Bone chips removed from the vertebrae during implantation or bone growth stimulators can be inserted into the fusion chamber or otherwise applied to the implant to enhance bone ingrowth.
Claims22
A spinal implant comprising:
- (a) a first element comprising first connection means for engaging a first vertebra, said first connection means comprising a first fusion chamber having at least one opening therein for facilitating bone ingrowth to fuse said first element to the first vertebra;
- (b) a second element comprising second connection means for engaging a second vertebra, said second connection means comprising a second fusion chamber having at least one opening therein for facilitating bone ingrowth to fuse said second element to the second vertebra;
- and
- (c) articulation means, coupling said first element to said second element, for allowing relative movement between said first element and said second element;
- wherein said first element comprises a first hemicylinder having a first articulation surface and a first radiused outer wall, and said second element comprises a second hemicylinder having a second articulation surface and a second radiused outer wall and wherein said first articulation surface abuts said second articulation surface to form said articulation means.
A spinal implant comprising:
- (a) a first element having a first articulation surface;
- (b) a second element having a second articulation surface engaging at least a portion of said first articulation surface along a support axis;
- (c) first connection means for connecting said first element to a first vertebra;
- and
- (d) second connection means for connecting said second element to a second vertebra;
- wherein said first and second articulation surfaces allow relative motion therebetween, and resist axial compression in the direction of said support axis;
- and wherein at least one of said first connection means and said second connection means comprise a fusion chamber having at least one opening therein for facilitating bone ingrowth;
- wherein said first element comprises a first hemicylinder having said first articulation surface and a first radiused outer wall, and said second element comprises a second hemicylinder having said second articulation surface and a second radiused outer wall, and wherein said first articulation surface abuts said second articulation surface to form an articulation means.
A method of maintaining an intervertebral space between a first vertebra and a second vertebra, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) removing a section of the first vertebra to form a cavity therein;
- (b) mounting a first element of a spinal implant within the cavity formed in the first vertebra, the first element comprising a first articulation surface and a first fusion chamber having at least one opening therein for facilitating bone ingrowth;
- (c) connecting a second element of the spinal implant to the second vertebra, the second element comprising a second articulation surface, wherein the first and second articulation surfaces adjoin to form a joint allowing relative pivotal movement between the first and second elements but preventing relative compression between the first and second elements;
A spinal implant comprising:
- (a) a first element comprising first connection means for engaging a first vertebra;
- (b) a second element, pivotally connected to said first element, and comprising second connection means for engaging a second vertebra;
- and
- (c) stabilizing means for temporarily rigidly coupling said first element to said second element;
- wherein said first element comprises a first hemicylinder having a first articulation surface and a first radiused outer wall, and said second element comprises a second hemicylinder having a second articulation surface and a second radiused outer wall and wherein said first articulation surface abuts said second articulation surface to form said pivotal connection.
A method of maintaining an intervertebral space between a first vertebra and a second vertebra, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) connecting a first element of an implant to the first vertebra;
- (b) connecting a second element of an implant to the second vertebra, the second element being pivotally connected to the first element;
- and
- (c) temporarily rigidly coupling the first element to the second element;
- wherein said first element comprises a first hemicylinder having a first articulation surface and a first radiused outer wall, and said second element comprises a second hemicylinder having a second articulation surface and a second radiused outer wall, and wherein said first articulation surface abuts said second articulation surface to form said pivotal connection.
