Abstract
The present invention relates to methods for treating protozoan infections comprising administering to a subject suffering from protozoan infection, a bacteriocidal/permeability-inducing (BPI) protein product.
Claims15
A method of treating protozoan infections comprising the step of administering alone a composition consisting essentially of a therapeutically effective amount of a bactericidal/permeability-increasing (BPI) protein product and a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent, adjuvant or carrier, said BPI protein product being BPI holoprotein, a BPI fragment, a BPI variant, a BPI analog, or a BPI-derived peptide, or dimeric forms thereof, to a subject suffering from a protozoan infection, and wherein protozoa involved in the protozoan infection are susceptible to the BPI protein product.
A method of treating protozoan infections comprising:
- (a) the step of administering a composition consisting essentially of a therapeutically effective amount of a BPI protein product and a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent, adjuvant or carrier, said BPI protein product being BPI holoprotein, a BPI fragment, a BPI variant, a BPI analog, or a BPI-derived peptide, or dimeric forms thereof, to a subject suffering from a protozoan infection, and wherein protozoa involved in the protozoan infection are susceptible to the BPI protein product;
- and
- (b) the step of administering a non-BPI anti-protozoan agent.
A method of killing or inhibiting growth of a protozoa comprising the step of contacting alone the protozoa with a composition consisting essentially of a bactericidal/permeability-increasing (BPI) protein product in an amount effective to kill or inhibit growth of said protozoa and a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent, adjuvant or carrier, said BPI protein product being BPI holoprotein, a BPI fragment, a BPI variant, a BPI analog, or a BPI-derived peptide, or dimeric forms thereof, and where the protozoa is susceptible to the BPI protein product.
A method of killing or inhibiting growth of a protozoa comprising:
- (a) the step of contacting the protozoa with a composition consisting essentially of a BPI protein product in an amount effective to kill or inhibit growth of said protozoa and a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent, adjuvant or carrier, said BPI protein product being BPI holoprotein, a BPI fragment, a BPI variant, a BPI analog, or a BPI-derived peptide, or dimeric forms thereof, and wherein the protozoa is susceptible to the BPI protein product;
- and
- (b) the step of contacting the protozoa with a non-BPI anti-protozoan agent.
