Abstract
Phosphors having a doped core are surrounded by a shell material. Additionally, these nanocrystalline phosphors, or larger phosphors formed by conventional or other processes may be surrounded by a shell that prevents or significantly reduces non-radiative recombination at the surface of the original phosphor.
Claims19
A nanocrystalline phosphor comprising a core comprising a doped semiconductor host material, said core having a diameter of 1 to 30 nm and being surrounded by an inorganic shell material, said doped semiconductor host material having a first bandgap defining band edges, said shell material having a thickness of less than one-half the diameter of said core, and said shell having a second bandgap either larger than said first bandgap or having no states within 20 meV to 200 meV of said band edges, or having a second bandgap offset from said first bandgap such that an electron or hole from said doped host material is reflected back into said doped semiconductor host material.
