Abstract
Formation of hexavalent chromium is reduced during incineration/combustion of materials containing hexavalent chromium by adding to the waste prior to or during combustion a small amount of sulfur. The sulfur can be added as elemental sulfur, as sulfur dioxide, or as high sulfur fuels or high sulfur waste.
Claims6
A method for minimizing the amount of hexavalent chromium present in combustion air streams resulting from burning combustibles containing chromium comprising adding a stoichiometric amount of sulfur to said combustibles prior to or during burning with respect to chromium to said ambustible, and burning said combustibles.
A method for converting hexavalent chromium present in combustion air streams resulting from burning combustibles containing hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium comprising adding a stoichiometric amount of sulfur to said combustibles prior to or during burning with respect to hexavalent chromium to said combustibles and burning said combustibles whereby said hexavalent chromium is reduced to trivalent chromium.
