Apparatus and method for performing look-ahead scheduling of DMA transfers of data from a host memory to a transmit buffer memory

An apparatus for transferring data from a source memory to a peripheral interface via a bus, the apparatus comprising:

• a buffer memory coupled to the source memory and the peripheral interface;
• a schedule table for storing entries, each entry corresponding to data to be transmitted from the source memory to the peripheral interface;
• a first pointer for pointing to successive entries in the schedule table, the first pointer advancing through the schedule table at a first rate;
• a second pointer for pointing to successive entries in the schedule table, the second pointer advancing through the schedule table at a second rate slower than the first rate of the first pointer, the second pointer thus pointing to each entry at a time subsequent to when the first pointer points to each entry;
• first circuitry operative such that when the first pointer points to a particular entry in the schedule table, the first circuitry initiates a data transfer of data corresponding to the particular entry, the data transfer being from the source memory to the buffer memory via the bus;
• and
• second circuitry operative such that when the second pointer points to the particular entry in the schedule table at a time subsequent to the first pointer, the second circuitry transfers the data from the buffer memory to the peripheral interface.

An apparatus for transferring data from a host to a peripheral interface via a bus, the apparatus comprising:

• a transmit buffer memory coupled to the peripheral interface;
• a schedule table data structure in a memory, the schedule table including a plurality of locations, the schedule table storing an entry in at least one of the locations, and each location representing a point in time at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• a current time counter, each value output by the current time counter representing a point in time, the current time counter outputting values at a rate at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• a schedule table pointer for pointing to successive locations in the schedule table, a value of the schedule table pointer thereby representing a point in time, the schedule table pointer advancing through the schedule table at a rate faster than the current time counter outputs values, so that during operation the schedule table pointer represents a point in time which is ahead of the point in time currently output by the current time counter;
• first circuitry that starts transferring particular data from the host to the transmit buffer memory via the bus when a valid entry is stored at the location pointed to by the schedule table pointer;
• and
• second circuitry that transfers the particular data from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface when the current time counter output reaches a value representing at least the same point in time that was represented by the schedule table pointer when the data transfer was initiated.

An apparatus for transferring data between a host and a peripheral interface via a bus, the apparatus comprising:

• a transmit buffer memory coupled to the peripheral interface;
• a schedule table data structure in a memory, the schedule table including a plurality of locations, the schedule table storing an entry in at least one of the locations, and each location representing a point in time at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• a current time counter, each value output by the current time counter representing a point in time, the current time counter outputting values at a rate at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• a schedule table pointer for pointing to successive locations in the schedule table, a value of the schedule table pointer thereby representing a point in time, the schedule table pointer advancing through the schedule table at a rate faster than the current time counter outputs values, so that during operation the schedule table pointer represents a point in time which is ahead of the point in time currently output by the current time counter;
• first circuitry that generates a DMA request for a data transfer of particular data from the host to the transmit buffer memory when an entry is stored at the location pointed to by the schedule table pointer;
• second circuitry that transfers the particular data from the host to the transmit buffer memory via the bus in response to the DMA request such that the particular data is stored in the transmit buffer memory by the time the current time counter output reaches a value representing at least the same point in time that was represented by the schedule table pointer when the DMA request was generated.

An apparatus for transferring data between a host and a peripheral interface via a bus, the apparatus comprising:

• a transmit buffer memory coupled to the peripheral interface;
• a schedule table data structure in a memory, the schedule table including a plurality of locations, the schedule table an entry in at least one of the locations, and each location representing a point in time at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• a current time pointer that points to successive locations in the schedule table, a value of the current time pointer thereby representing a point in time, the current time pointer advancing through the schedule table at a rate at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• a schedule table pointer for pointing to successive locations in the schedule table, a value of the schedule table pointer thereby representing a point in time, the schedule table pointer advancing through the schedule table at a rate faster than the current time pointer advances, so that during operation the schedule table pointer points to a location in the schedule table that is ahead in time of the location pointed to by the current time pointer;
• first circuitry that generates a DMA request for a data transfer of particular data from the host to the transmit buffer memory when a valid entry is stored at the location pointed to by the schedule table pointer;
• second circuitry that transfers the particular data from the host to the transmit buffer memory via the bus in response to the DMA request;
• and
• third circuitry that transmits the particular data from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface when the current time pointer points at the location that the schedule table pointer pointed at when the DMA request was generated.

An apparatus for transferring data between a host memory in a host computer and a transmit buffer memory on a network adapter, the apparatus comprising:

• a transmit buffer memory on the adapter;
• a schedule table data structure in a memory on the adapter, the schedule table including a plurality of locations, the schedule table storing an entry in at least one of the locations in the table, and each location representing a point in time at which data is to be transmitted from the transmit buffer memory;
• a current time counter, each value output by the current time counter representing a point in time, the current time counter outputting values at a rate at which data is to be transmitted from the transmit buffer memory;
• a pointer for pointing to successive locations in the schedule table, the pointer advancing through the schedule table at a rate faster than the current time counter outputs values, so that during operation a value stored in the pointer represents a point in time which is ahead of the point in time currently represented by the value output from the current time counter;
• first circuitry that generates a DMA request for a data transfer of particular data from the host memory to the transmit buffer memory when a valid entry is stored at the location pointed to by the pointer;
• and
• second circuitry that transfers the particular data from the host memory to the transmit buffer memory in response to the DMA request such that the particular data is stored in the transmit buffer memory by the time the current time counter output reaches the value that was stored in the pointer at the time of the DMA request.

An apparatus for transferring data from a host memory in a host computer to a physical layer interface on a network adapter, the apparatus comprising:

• a transmit data FIFO on the adapter;
• a schedule table data structure in a memory on the adapter, the schedule table including a plurality of locations, the schedule table storing an entry in at least one of the locations in the table, each location representing a point in time at which data is to be transmitted from the transmit data FIFO, and each entry being associated with a virtual circuit for which data resides on the host to be transmitted to the physical layer interface;
• a current time counter, each value output by the current time counter representing a point in time, the current time counter outputting values at a rate at which data is to be transmitted from the transmit data FIFO;
• a pointer for pointing to successive locations in the schedule table, the pointer advancing through the schedule table at a rate faster than the current time counter outputs values so that during operation a value stored in the pointer represents a point in time which is ahead of the point in time currently represented by the value output from the current time counter;
• first circuitry that generates a DMA request for a data transfer from the host memory to the transmit data FIFO when a valid entry is stored at the location pointed to by the pointer, the request being for a data transfer of particular data for the virtual circuit associated with the entry;
• second circuitry that transfers the particular data for the virtual circuit from the host memory to the transmit data FIFO in response to the DMA request;
• and
• third circuitry that transfers the particular data for the virtual circuit from the transmit data FIFO to the physical layer interface when the current time counter output reaches a value representing at least the same point in time that was represented by the pointer at the time of the DMA request.

A method of transferring data from a source memory to a peripheral interface via a bus, the method comprising:

• outputting values from a current time counter, each value output by the current time counter representing a point in time, the current time counter outputting values at a rate at which data is to be transferred from a transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• storing entries in a schedule table, the schedule table including a plurality of locations, storing an entry in at least one of the locations in the schedule table, and each location representing a point in time at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• advancing a schedule table pointer through successive locations in the schedule table, a value of the schedule table pointer thereby representing a point in time, the schedule table pointer advancing at a rate faster than the current time counter outputs values, so that during operation the schedule table pointer represents a point in time which is ahead of the point in time currently output by the current time counter;
• starting to transfer particular data from the source memory to the transmit buffer memory via the bus when a valid entry is stored at the location pointed to by the schedule table pointer;
• and
• transferring the particular data from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface when the current time counter output reaches a value representing at least the same point in time that was represented by the schedule table pointer when the data transfer was initiated.

A method of transferring data from a host to a peripheral interface via a bus, the method comprising:

• outputting values from a current time counter, each value output by the current time counter representing a point in time, the current time counter outputting values at a rate at which data is to be transferred from a transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• storing entries in a schedule table, the schedule table including a plurality of locations, storing an entry in at least one of the locations in the schedule table, and each location representing a point in time at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• advancing a schedule table pointer through successive locations in the schedule table, a value of the schedule table pointer thereby representing a point in time, the schedule table pointer advancing at a rate faster than the current time counter outputs values so that during operation the schedule table pointer represents a point in time which is ahead of the point in time currently output by the current time counter
• starting to transfer particular data from the host to the transmit buffer memory via the bus when a valid entry is stored at the location pointed to by the schedule table pointer;
• and
• transferring the particular data from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface when the current time counter input reaches a value representing at least the same point in time that was represented by the schedule table pointer when the data transfer was initiated.

A method of transferring data between a host and a peripheral interface via a bus, the method comprising:

• outputting values from a current time counter, each value output by the current time counter representing a point in time, the current time counter outputting values at a rate at which data is to be transferred from a transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• providing a schedule table data structure in a memory, the schedule table including a plurality of locations, the schedule table storing an entry in at least one of the locations in the table, each location representing a point in time at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• advancing a schedule table pointer through successive locations in the schedule table, a value of the schedule table pointer thereby representing a point in time, the schedule table pointer advancing at a rate faster than the current time counter outputs values so that during operation the schedule table pointer represents a point in time which is ahead of the point in time currently output by the current time counter;
• generating a DMA request for a data transfer of particular data from the host to the transmit buffer memory when a valid entry is stored at the location pointed to by the schedule table pointer;
• and
• transferring the particular data from the host to the transmit buffer memory via the bus in response to the DMA request such that the particular data is stored in the transmit buffer memory by the time the current time counter output reaches a value representing at least the same point in time that was represented by the schedule table pointer when the DMA request was generated.

A method of transferring data between a host and a peripheral interface via a bus, the method comprising:

• providing a transmit buffer memory coupled to the peripheral interface;
• storing entries in a schedule table data structure in memory, the schedule table including a plurality of locations, and storing an entry in at least one of the locations in the schedule table, each location representing a point in time at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• advancing a current time pointer through successive locations in the schedule table, a value of the current time pointer thereby representing a point in time, the current time pointer advancing at a rate at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• advancing a schedule table pointer through successive locations in the schedule table, a value of the schedule table pointer thereby representing a point in time, the schedule table pointer advancing at a rate faster than the current time pointer advances so that the schedule table pointer points to a location in the schedule table that is ahead in time of the location pointed to by the current time pointer;
• generating a DMA request for a data transfer of particular data from the host to the transmit buffer memory when a valid entry is stored at the location pointed to by the schedule table pointer;
• transferring the particular data from the host to the transmit buffer memory via the bus in response to the DMA request;
• and
• transmitting the particular data from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface when the current time pointer reaches a value representing at least the same point in time that was represented by the schedule table pointer when the DMA request was generated.

A method of transferring data between a host memory in a host computer and a transmit buffer memory on a network adapter, the method comprising:

• providing a transmit buffer memory on the adapter;
• storing entries in a schedule table data structure, the schedule table including a plurality of locations, and storing an entry in at least one of the locations in the schedule table, each location representing a point in time at which data is to be transferred from the transmit buffer memory to the peripheral interface;
• outputting values from a current time counter, each value output by the current time counter representing a point in time, the current time counter outputting values at a rate at which data is to be transmitted from the transmit buffer memory;
• advancing a pointer for pointing to successive locations in the schedule table, the pointer advancing through the schedule table at a rate faster than the current time counter outputs values so that during operation the value stored in the pointer represents a point in time which is ahead of the point in time currently represented by the value output from the current time counter;
• generating a DMA request for a data transfer of particular data from the host memory to the transmit buffer memory when a valid entry is stored at the location pointed to by the pointer;
• and
• transferring the particular data from the host memory to the transmit buffer memory in response to the DMA request such that the particular data is stored in the transmit buffer memory by the time the current time counter output reaches the value that was stored in the pointer at the time of the DMA request.

A method of transferring data from a host memory in a host computer to a physical layer interface on a network adapter, the method comprising:

• providing a transmit data FIFO on the adapter;
• storing entries in a schedule table data structure in a memory, the schedule table including a plurality of locations, and storing an entry in at least one location in the schedule table, each location representing a point in time at which data is to be transferred from the transmit data FIFO to the physical layer interface, each entry being associated with a virtual circuit for which data resides on the host to be transmitted to the physical layer interface;
• outputting values from a current time counter, each value output by the current time counter representing a point in time, the current time counter outputting values at a rate at which data is to be transmitted from the transmit data FIFO;
• advancing a pointer through successive locations in the schedule table, the pointer advancing through the schedule table at a rate faster than the current time counter outputs values so that during operation a value stored in the pointer represents a point in time which is ahead of the point in time currently represented by the value output from the current time counter;
• generating a DMA request for a data transfer from the host memory to the transmit data FIFO when a valid entry is stored at the location pointed to by the pointer, the DMA request being for a data transfer of particular data for the virtual circuit associated with the entry;
• transferring the particular data for the virtual circuit from the host memory to the transmit data FIFO in response to the DMA request;
• and
• transferring the particular data for the virtual circuit from the transmit data FIFO to the physical layer interface when the current time counter output reaches a value representing at least the same point in time that was represented by the pointer at the time of the DMA request.

A method of transferring data from a source memory to a peripheral interface via a bus, the method comprising:

• providing a buffer memory coupled to the source memory and the peripheral interface;
• storing entries in a schedule table, each entry corresponding to data to be transmitted from the source memory to the peripheral interface;
• advancing a first pointer, the first pointer pointing to successive entries in the schedule table, the first pointer advancing through the schedule table at a first rate;
• advancing a second pointer, the second pointer pointing to successive entries in the schedule table, the second pointer advancing through the schedule table at a second rate slower than the first rate of the first pointer, the second pointer thus pointing to each entry at a time subsequent to when the first pointer points to each entry;
• starting to transfer data from the source memory to a buffer memory via the bus when the first pointer points to a particular entry in the schedule table, the data transfer being for data corresponding to the particular entry;
• and
• transferring the data from the buffer memory to the peripheral interface when the second pointer points to the particular entry in the schedule table at a time subsequent to the first pointer.
