Abstract
A superhard cutting element having a polished, low friction 1 substantially planar cutting face with a surface finish roughness of 10 .mu. in. or less and preferably 0.5 .mu. in. or less. A chamfered cutting edge and side surface of the superhard material table of the same surface finish roughness are also disclosed. The surface roughness of the aforementioned superhard material table portions may be reduced by mechanically smoothing and polishing according to one of several variations of the method of the invention.
Claims29
A cutting element for drilling subterranean formations, comprising a substantially planar table of superhard material, said table having a cutting face, a side surface to a rear of said cutting face and a cutting edge including a chamfer interposed between said cutting face and said side surface, at least a portion of each of said cutting face, said side surface and said chamfer possessing a surface finish of about 10 .mu.in. or less roughness.
A rotary drag bit for drilling subterranean formations, comprising:
- a bit body having a shank secured thereto for connection of said rotary drag bit to a drill string;
- a face on said bit body;
- a plurality of superhard cutting elements disposed on said bit body face, at least one of said superhard cutting elements having a substantially planar superhard cutting face having a chamfered cutting edge, said cutting face and said chamfered cutting edge each including at least a portion with a surface finish of about 10 .mu.in. or less roughness.
A cutting element for drilling subterranean formations, comprising a mass of superhard material defining a substantially planar cutting face, a cutting edge and a side surface to a rear of said cutting edge, at least a portion of said cutting face, said cutting edge or said side surface having a surface finish of about 10 .mu.in. or less roughness.
A cutting element comprising a table of superhard material supported by a substrate and having a substantially planar cutting face, a chamfered cutting edge and a side surface to a rear of said chamfered cutting edge, at least a portion of at least one of said cutting face, said chamfered cutting edge and said side surface being polished to a substantial mirror finish.
A cutting element for use in drilling a subterranean formation, comprising a mass of superhard material exhibiting a cutting face including at least a portion which has been abrasively smoothed to a substantial mirror finish.
A rotary bit for drilling a subterranean formation, comprising:
- a bit body;
- and
- at least one cutting element mounted to said bit body, oriented to project therefrom and having a superhard cutting face bounded at a periphery thereof by a cutting edge for engaging the subterranean formation, at least a portion of said cutting face having been abrasively smoothed to a substantial mirror finish.
A method of cutting a subterranean rock formation, comprising:
- engaging said rock formation with a superhard material cutting face and peripheral cutting edge of a cutting element;
- cutting a chip from said rock formation with said cutting edge, said chip contacting at least a portion of said cutting face thereafter;
- and
- reducing stress on said chip attributable to said contact with said cutting face portion to facilitate chip movement thereacross by providing a mirror-like surface finish on said cutting face portion.
A method of cutting a subterranean rock formation, comprising:
- engaging said rock formation with a superhard material cutting face and peripheral cutting edge of a cutting element, thereby applying stress to said rock formation to induce failure of said rock formation immediately adjacent said peripheral cutting edge and produce a chip of formation material, said chip contacting at least a portion of said cutting face;
- and
- maintaining stress on said chip attributable to contact with said cutting face portion at a lesser magnitude than said formation failure-inducing stress attributable to said engagement of said rock formation by providing a mirror-like surface finish on said cutting face portion.
