Abstract
An integrated scanner for scanning a barcode is formed on a common substrate. The scanner may include a micro-machined mirror, a laser diode, and a detector, mounted on a single substrate or several connected substrates. Lenses can be used to focus a laser beam from the laser diode as well as expand a laser beam deflected by the micro-machined mirror. The scanner may also scan a barcode without using a micro-machined mirror by rotating the laser diode.

A light scanning device formed on a common substrate, comprising:
- a light scanner, mounted on said substrate, for scanning light across a target and including
- a light source, mounted on said substrate, for producing a light beam,
- a deflector, mounted on said substrate for deflecting said light beam across said target in a desired pattern, and
- a lens for focusing the light beam produced by the light source;
- and
- a sensor, mounted on said substrate, for detecting light reflected from said target and creating a signal representative of said detected light,
- wherein said light source is offset from an optical axis of said lens.
A light scanning device formed on a common substrate, comprising:

- a light source, mounted on said substrate, for producing a light beam, and
- a deflector, mounted on said substrate for deflecting said light beam across said target in a desired pattern;
- and
- a sensor, mounted on said substrate, for detecting light reflected from said target and creating a signal representative of said detected light,
- wherein said deflector comprises a mirror assembly, which includes
- a frame secured to said substrate;
- a mirror mounted in a center of said sensor;
- and
- a pair of hinges connected to the frame and respective ends of said sensor for suspending the sensor above a surface of said common substrate without additional supports and for allowing said sensor and said mirror to rotatc about a rotation axis.
