Novel benzothiophenes, and intermediates thereof, and the uses and formulations thereof, are provided by the present invention.

A compound of formula II:
- ##STR8## wherein R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are independently C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, or a salt or solvate thereof.
A compound of formula IV:
- ##STR9## wherein R.sub.4, R.sub.5, and R.sub.6 are independently C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, or salt or solvate thereof.
