Abstract
A process for the preparation of toner including (i) aggregating a colorant and a latex emulsion containing a resin, reactive surfactant, and an ionic surfactant to form toner sized aggregates, (ii) coalescing or fusing said aggregates; and optionally (iii) isolating the toner generated, washing, and drying the toner.
Claims16
A process of the preparation of toner comprising
- (i) aggregating a colorant and a latex emulsion generated from polymerization of monomer and reactive surfactant in the presence of an ionic surfactant to form aggregates,
- (ii) coalescing or fusing said aggregates;
- and
- (iii) isolating the toner generated, washing, and drying the toner, wherein said reactive surfactant is addition polymerizable and ethylenically unsaturated,
- wherein said aggregating is below the resin glass transition temperature present in the latex emulsion, the coalescing or fusing of said aggregates is above the resin glass transition temperature, and there results a toner with size of from about 2 to about 20 microns in volume average diameter, and
- wherein the reactive surfactant is selected in an amount of from about 0.05 to about 10 weight percent based on the amount of said monomer.
