Abstract
The invention provides antitumor therapeutic methods employing bovine or ovine interferon-tau (IFN-.tau.) proteins and polypeptides. The IFN-.tau. proteins exhibit the antiviral and antiproliferative properties characteristic of type I interferons. An advantage of the invention is that IFN-.tau. has essentially no cytotoxic effects on treated cells as does, for example, IFN-.alpha..
Claims6
A method of inhibiting growth of tumor cells in a subject, comprising
- administering ovine or bovine interferon-tau to the subject in an amount effective to inhibit growth of the tumor cells and which induces a change in white blood cell count in the subject which is less than the change in white blood cell count which would be induced in the subject by an amount of interferon-alpha having the same tumor growth inhibition effect.
