Abstract
Propylene polymer fibers are characterized by a unique crystalline microstructure as determined by small angle X-ray diffraction. The fibers and yarns comprising same exhibit improved recovery from compression and bending and are suited for a wide range of applications including geotextile, apparel and upholstery fabrics, carpet yarns and other textile products.
Claims34
Fiber comprising propylene polymer and having an Apparent Average Microfibril Diameter of at least 240 .ANG., wherein the Apparent Average Microfibril Diameter is a value calculated from small angle X-ray diffraction measurements, with the fiber positioned such that its longitudinal axis is perpendicular to the X-ray beam and with the fiber positioned such that its longitudinal axis is disposed at an angle, .alpha., from the perpendicular to the X-ray beam, as an average of ##EQU5## at the angles, .alpha., of 10.degree. and 20.degree., and wherein I.sub.m (0) is maximum intensity of the small angle X-ray meridional reflection with the fiber positioned such that its longitudinal axis is perpendicular to the X-ray beam,
- I.sub.m (.alpha.) is maximum intensity of the small angle X-ray meridional reflection with the fiber positioned such that its longitudinal axis is inclined at the angle, .alpha., from the perpendicular to the X-ray beam, ##EQU6## and .sub..phi.m is an angular position, in radians, of the center of the small angle X-ray meridional reflection at half height relative to the center of the incident X-ray beam with the fiber positioned such that its longitudinal axis is perpendicular to the X-ray beam,
- and wherein the small angle X-ray diffraction is conducted with CuK.alpha. radiation having a wavelength of 1.5418 .ANG. and the X-ray beam is slit collimated to an angular width at half height of 1.81 minutes.
Fiber comprising propylene polymer and having an Apparent Average Microfibril Diameter of about 240 .ANG. to about 500 .ANG., wherein the Apparent Average Microfibril Diameter is a value calculated from small angle X-ray diffraction measurements, with the fiber positioned such that its longitudinal axis is perpendicular to the X-ray beam and with the fiber positioned such that its longitudinal axis is disposed at an angle, .alpha., from the perpendicular to the X-ray beam, as an average of ##EQU7## at the angles, .alpha., of 10.degree. and 20.degree., and wherein I.sub.m (0) is maximum intensity of the small angle X-ray meridional reflection with the fiber positioned such that its longitudinal axis is perpendicular to the X-ray beam,
- I.sub.m (.alpha.) is maximum intensity of the small angle X-ray meridional reflection with the fiber positioned such that its longitudinal axis is inclined at the angle, .alpha., from the perpendicular to the X-ray beam, ##EQU8## and .sub..phi.m is an angular position, in radians, of the center of the small angle X-ray meridional reflection at half height relative to the center of the incident X-ray beam with the fiber positioned such that its longitudinal axis is perpendicular to the X-ray beam,
- and wherein the small angle X-ray diffraction is conducted with CuK.alpha. radiation having a wavelength of 1.5418 .ANG. and the X-ray beam is slit collimated to an angular width at half height of 1.81 minutes.
