Abstract
A method is disclosed to remove the image artifacts produced by Maxwell terms arising from the imaging gradients in an echo planar imaging pulse sequence. The frequency and phase errors caused by the Maxwell terms are calculated on an individual slice basis. During the subsequent data acquisition these errors are compensated by dynamically adjusting the receiver frequency and phase.
Claims7
Method for correcting Maxwell term errors produced by imaging gradients in an NMR system during the acquisition of an NMR image using an echo-planar pulse sequence, the steps comprising:
- a) calculating a phase shift .phi.(m,z) caused by Maxwell term errors for each NMR echo signal m, and each slice located at z in the echo-planar pulse sequence;
- b) calculating a frequency shift .DELTA.f(z) caused by Maxwell term errors for each slice located at z;
- c) performing the echo-planar pulse sequence by
- i) producing an RF excitation pulse;
- ii) producing a readout magnetic field gradient which alternates in value to produce a corresponding series of NMR echo signals;
- iii) receiving each of said NMR echo signals and demodulating each with an RF reference signal that has been shifted in phase by its corresponding calculated phase shift .phi.(m,z) and has been shifted in frequency by the calculated frequency shift .DELTA.f(z);
- and
- iv) storing each demodulated NMR echo signal to form an NMR data set;
- and
- d) reconstructing an image from the NMR data set.
An MRI system for performing an echo-planar pulse sequence which comprises:
- means for producing a polarizing magnetic field;
- means for producing an RF excitation pulse;
- means for producing a readout magnetic field gradient which alternates in value to produce a corresponding series of NMR echo signals;
- a receiver for receiving each of the NMR echo signals and demodulating each with an RF reference signal that is shifted in phase by an amount which compensates for phase errors caused by Maxwell terms and which is shifted in frequency by an amount which compensates for frequency errors caused by Maxwell terms;
- a memory for storing the demodulated NMR echo signals;
- and
- image reconstruction means for producing an image from the stored demodulated NMR echo signals.
