Abstract
Methods for orienting fibers and an apparatus for orienting fibers are provided for the fabrication of improved thin abrasive wheels utilizing uniform non-woven fiber reinforcement discs. The wheels are more resistant to hub push-out failure during grinding than wheels reinforced with woven fiber cloth.
Claims15
A method for fabricating a thin abrasive wheel using a uniform non-woven fiber reinforcement disc, comprising the steps:
- a) winding a first portion of a fiber on a plurality of support means to create a first zig-zag parallel fiber array having a circular periphery;
- b) winding at least one additional portion of the fiber on the plurality of support means in a direction from about 45 degrees to about 135 degrees relative to the first zig-zag parallel fiber array to create at least one additional zig-zag parallel fiber array having a circular periphery, and thereby form a reinforcement disc comprising a uniform non-woven fiber array;
- c) adding at least one layer of a mixture of abrasive grain and organic bond components to at least one reinforcement disc to form a uniform laminate;
- d) molding the uniform laminate under pressure to form a non-woven fiber reinforced thin abrasive wheel;
- and
- e) curing the non-woven fiber reinforced thin abrasive wheel.
A method for fabricating a thin abrasive wheel using a uniform non-woven fiber reinforcement disc, comprising the steps:
- a) laying a first portion of a fiber onto a support means comprising a moving belt to create a first zig-zag parallel fiber array having a circular periphery;
- b) laying at least one additional portion of the fiber over the first zig-zag parallel fiber array on the support means in a direction from about 45 degrees to about 135 degrees relative to the first zig-zag parallel fiber array to create at least one additional zig-zag parallel fiber array having a circular periphery, and thereby form a reinforcement disc comprising a uniform non-woven fiber array;
- c) adding at least one layer of a mixture of abrasive grain and organic bond components to at least one reinforcement disc to form a uniform laminate;
- d) molding the uniform laminate under pressure to form a non-woven fiber reinforced thin abrasive wheel;
- and
- e) curing the non-woven fiber reinforced thin abrasive wheel.
