Abstract
A flat bed scanner of the type commonly used as a stand-alone computer peripheral in combination with a contact image sensor module, the glass cover of which is removed and the module placed under the glass surface of a flat bed scanner and which extends the full width of the scanning area to provide a 1:1 scanning ratio using a rod lens to focus the image onto the image sensors, with a monorail carriage for the scanner and including low friction strips to prevent tipping of the module into the glass, paper sensors to control the beginning and end of the scanning and for accomplishing scanning in both directions.
Claims18
A flat bed scanner comprising:
- a housing including a top and adapted for use as a stand-alone peripheral for personal computers;
- a platen positioned in the housing top, having a first surface adapted to support an object to be scanned and a second surface opposed to the first surface;
- a carriage mounted within said housing and adapted for reciprocation between a first scanning direction and a second scanning direction within said housing;
- a contact image sensor module positioned on said carriage adjacent to and in sliding contact with the second surface of the platen, having a leading edge and a trailing edge relative to the first scanning direction and to the second scanning direction and adapted to convert visual images to a series of electronic data signals;
- the sensor module comprising a casing supporting a sensor, a light source, a first lens adapted to focus light from the light source to a predetermined position on the first surface of the platen and a second lens adapted to focus images of the object onto the electronic sensor;
- the second lens being positioned adjacent the second surface of the platen;
- a first electronic sensor mounted on the leading edge of the module, a second electronic sensor mounted on the trailing edge of the module, the first sensor and the second sensor adapted to detect the presence or absence of an object to be scanned and generates signals representative of the presence or absence of the object to be scanned;
- and
- a control system adapted to receive the signals from the module, to receive the signals foam the first sensor, to receive the signals from the second sensor, to control motion of the carriage and to control scanning of objects in the first scanning direction and in the second scanning direction.
In a stand-alone computer peripheral flat bed scanner including a housing, a carriage and a control system, the improvement comprising:
- a module including a first end, a second end and a plurality of contact image sensors adapted to convert visual images to a series of electronic data signals;
- a first low friction strip of tape positioned on a first end of said module and a second low fiction strip of tape positioned on a second end of said module, said first and second low friction strips being adapted to prevent tipping of the module into the platen.
A flat bed scanner comprising:
- a housing having a bottom surface, four walls, a top surface and a cover, the top surface including a platen and said cover adapted to overlie an object to be scanned;
- a contact image sensor module in sliding contact with the platen and adapted to generate digital signals for use by personal computers, the module having a plurality of sensors, a length, height and width, the length of said module extending across the platen and adapted to provide a 1:1 scanning ratio of the object to be scanned to the plurality of sensors;
- said image sensor module adapted to be supported and transported by a monorail extending from a first end of the housing to a second end of the scanner housing.
A stand-alone computer peripheral flat bed scanner comprising:
- a housing having a bottom surface, four walls, a top surface and a cover, the top surface including a platen and said cover adapted to overlie an object to be scanned;
- a contact image sensor module including a plurality of contact image sensors, and having a length, height and width the length of said module extending across the full width of the scanning area of said platen and adapted to provide a 1:1 scanning ratio;
- said image sensor module adapted to be supported and transported by a monorail extending from a first end of the housing to a second end of the housing;
- and
- means to prevent tipping of the module into the platen.
A method of scanning comprising:
- providing a first object to be scanned;
- providing a flat bed scanner having a platen and adapted for use by personal computers;
- providing a carriage adapted for reciprocation within the scanner;
- providing a contact image sensor module mounted on the carriage, the module having a first sensor mounted on a leading edge and adapted to detect the presence and absence of an object, a second sensor adapted mounted on a trailing edge and adapted to detect the presence and absence of an object and a third sensor adapted to convert images of an object into digital signals during scanning;
- placing the first object on the platen;
- moving the carriage in a first direction;
- detecting the presence of the first object with the first sensor;
- detecting the presence of the first object with the second sensor;
- beginning scanning of the first object by the third sensor;
- converting visual information from the object into electronic data;
- detecting the absence of the first object with the first sensor;
- stopping movement of the carriage;
- and
- stopping scanning of the first object.
