Abstract
A continuous mixing process is disclosed that provides improved dispersive mixing over conventional mixing processes. The process employs squeeze flow motion around a translating member at a Hencky strain greater than 2 and at a rate corresponding to a Deborah Number greater than 10.
Claims11
A continuous process for dispersively mixing a viscoelastic material, which comprises:
- i) introducing the material at a substantially constant rate into a mixing device comprising a housing having an inner surface, an inlet, an outlet, and a translating member within the housing, wherein the translating member translates with respect to the inner surface of the housing;
- ii) squeezing the material between the inner surface of the housing and the translating member, at a Hencky strain greater than 2 and at a rate corresponding to a Deborah Number greater than 10;
- and
- iii) withdrawing the material from the device at a substantially constant rate.
