Base plate-mounted microactuator for a suspension

A disk drive suspension comprising:

• a load beam formed from a single sheet of material and having a mounting region at a proximal end, a rigid region adjacent to a distal end, a spring region between the mounting region and the rigid region, a stationary section, and a moving section;
• a flexure at the distal end of the load beam and configured for receiving and supporting a read/write head;
• a linkage including at least a first resilient member, a second resilient member, and a third resilient member each formed unitarily from the same sheet of material as the load beam and attaching the moving section of the load beam to the stationary section of the load beam, the first resilient member and the second resilient member extending in a transverse direction from the moving section to the stationary section and located between the flexure and proximal end of the load beam, and the third resilient member extending in a longitudinal direction and located between the first and second resilient members and the proximal end of the load beam such that the moving section can pivot with respect to the stationary section;
• and
• a microactuator mounted on the load beam and for shifting the moving section of the load beam and the flexure along a tracking axis with respect to the stationary section in response to tracking control signals.

A disk drive suspension comprising:

• a load beam including:
• a mounting region at a proximal end of the load beam, the mounting region including a moving section and a stationary section, the stationary section including a first longitudinally extending arm and a second longitudinally extending arm with an open region therebetween, the moving section including a third longitudinally extending arm located in the open region between the first longitudinally extending arm and the second longitudinally extending arm;
• a spring region adjacent to the mounting region;
• and
• a rigid region adjacent to a distal end of the load beam, the spring region, rigid region, and distal end of the load beam attached to the moving section of the mounting region;
• a flexure at the distal end of the load beam and configured for receiving and supporting a read/write head;
• a linkage between the spring region and the proximal end of the load beam and including a first resilient member, a second resilient member, and a third resilient member each supporting the third longitudinally extending arm in the open region to allow the third longitudinally extending arm to shift transversely therein toward and away from the first longitudinally extending arm and the second longitudinally extending arm;
• and
• an electromagnetic microactuator mounted on the mounting region and for shifting the third longitudinally extending arm in the open region toward and away from the first longitudinally extending arm and the second longitudinally extending arm to move the spring region, rigid region, and distal end of the load beam and the flexure along a tracking axis with respect to the stationary section of the mounting region and in response to tracking control signals.
