System for forming and cutting a mineral fiber tow

A chopping device for cutting a continuous mineral fiber wool tow into discrete lengths comprising:

• a cot roll having a generally smooth outer circumferential surface;
• a drive motor for effecting rotation of said cot roll;
• a rotatable cutting roll juxtaposed to said cot roll and contacting said cot roll at its circumferential surface to rotate with said cot roll, said rotatable cutting roll and said cot roll defining a cutting nip for receiving said tow such that said tow is received in said nip and cut into discrete lengths, said cutting roll comprising a cutting wheel having a plurality of cutting blades associated therewith and spaced apart from one another circumferentially about said cutting wheel, and at least one of said cutting blades having lateral portions and a center portion which define a V, ends of said lateral portions opposite to said center portion are offset from said center portion along an outer circumferential surface of said cutting wheel in a direction of rotation of said cutting wheel.

A chopping device for cutting a continuous mineral fiber wool tow into discrete lengths comprising:

• a cot roll having a generally smooth outer circumferential surface;
• a drive motor for effecting rotation of said cot roll;
• a rotatable cutting roll juxtaposed to said cot roll and contacting said cot roll at its circumferential surface to rotate with said cot roll, said rotatable cutting roll and said cot roll defining a cutting nip for receiving said tow such that said tow is received in said nip and cut into discrete lengths, said cutting roll comprising a cutting wheel having a plurality of cutting blades associated therewith and spaced apart from one another circumferentially about said cutting wheel, and at least one of said cutting blades extending axially along said cutting wheel and is chevron-shaped in its axial extension along said cutting wheel.
