Abstract
Flourobenzyl ether derivatives of the formula ##STR1## and liquid crystalline mixtures which contain such compounds are prepared and employed in electro-optical display devices.
Claims12
A compound of the formula ##STR7## wherein R.sub.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 -alkenyl;
- C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkenyl in which one CH.sub.2 group is replaced by an oxygen atom;
- C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkenyl;
- or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkenyl in which one CH.sub.2 group is replaced by an oxygen atom;
- X is H or F;
- A and B each independently is trans-1,4-cyclo-hexylene, trans-1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, pyridine-2,5-diyl, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, 1,4-phenylene or 1,4-phenylene substituted with 1 or 2 fluorine atoms;
- Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 each independently is a single bond, --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --, --O--CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 --O--, --C.tbd.C, --(CH.sub.2).sub.4 --, --O(CH.sub.2).sub.3 --, --(CH.sub.2).sub.3 O--, --CH.dbd.CH--CH.sub.2 O-- or --CH.dbd.CH--(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --, and Z.sup.2 also is --OCH.sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH-- or --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH--;
- wherein at least one of groups Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 is a single bond;
- n is 0 or 1;
- and
- R.sup.2 is C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 -alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 -alkenyl;
- C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkenyl in which one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups is replaced by oxygen;
- C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkenyl in which one or more hydrogen atoms is replaced by a fluorine atom;
- or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkenyl in which one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups is replaced by an oxygen and in which one or more hydrogen atoms is replaced by a fluorine atom;
- and
- wherein R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, R.sub.2 is not C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 -alkyl.

A liquid crystalline mixture comprising at least two components, wherein at least one component is a compound of the formula ##STR8## wherein R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 -alkenyl;
- C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkenyl in which one CH.sub.2 group is replaced by an oxygen atom;
- C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkenyl in which at least one hydrogen atom is replaced by a fluorine atom;
- or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkenyl in which one CH.sub.2 group is replaced by an oxygen atom and;
- X is H or F;
- A and B each independently is trans-1,4-cyclo-hexylene, trans-1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, pyridine-2,5-diyl, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, 1,4-phenylene or 1,4-phenylene substituted with 1 or 2 fluorine atoms;
- Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 each independently is a single bond, --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --, --O--CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 --O--, --C.tbd.C, --(CH.sub.2).sub.4 --, --O(CH.sub.2).sub.3 --, --(CH.sub.2).sub.3)--, --CH.dbd.CH--CH.sub.2 O-- or --CH.dbd.CH--(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --, and Z.sup.2 also is --OCH.sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH-- or --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH--;
- wherein at least one of groups Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 is a single bond;
- n is 0 or 1;
- and
- R.sup.2 is C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 -alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 -alkenyl;
- C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkenyl in which one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups is replaced by oxygen;
- C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkenyl in which one or more hydrogen atoms is replaced by a fluorine atom;
- or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkenyl in which one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups is replaced by an oxygen and in which one or more hydrogen atoms is replaced by a fluorine atom and wherein R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, R.sup.2 is not C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkyl.
