Abstract
Method for screening for risk of Alzheimer's disease involve assaying for a guanine to thymine substitution at position 1924 of the gene encoding the human amyloid precursor protein. Also described are transgenic mammals harboring an expressable gene sequence encoding human amyloid precursor protein having a phenyanine for valine amino acid substitution in the transmembrane domain of the amyloid precursor protein.
Claims9
An isolated DNA sequence encoding human amyloid precursor protein having a valine to phenylalanine amino acid substitution at amino acid position 717(transcript APP.sub.770) in the transmembrane domain of the amyloid precursor protein.
A method to assist in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in a patient, comprising the step of assaying for a guanine to thymine point mutation at position 1924 of the patient's gene encoding the amyloid precursor protein;
- wherein detection of the mutation is indicative that the patient is at risk for Alzheimer's disease.
