Abstract
Products containing carbon fibrils having a morphology of vermicular tubes that are free of a continuous thermal carbon overcoat and have graphitic layers, wherein the length of the projection of the graphitic layers on the fibril axis extends along the axis for a distance of at least two fibril diameters. The fibrils are used to form composites, adsorbents and mats.
Claims42
A composite comprising a volume of carbon fibrils in a matrix wherein the volume of carbon fibrils comprises a multiplicity of fibrils having a morphology comprising vermicular tubes that are free of a continuous thermal carbon overcoat and have graphitic layers, wherein the length of the projection of the graphitic layers on the fibril axis extends along the axis for a distance of at least two fibril diameters.
A volume of carbon fibrils comprising a multiplicity of fibrils having a morphology comprising vermicular tubes that are free of a continuous thermal overcoat and have graphitic layers, wherein the length of the projection of the graphitic layers on the fibril axis extends along the axis for a distance of at least two fibril diameters and said fibrils form an adsorbent.
Continuous fibers reinforced with a volume of carbon fibrils comprising a multiplicity of fibrils having a morphology comprising vermicular tubes that are free of a continuous thermal carbon overcoat and have graphitic layers that are substantially parallel to the fibril axis.
A volume of carbon fibrils comprising a multiplicity of fibrils having a morphology consisting of vermicular tubes that are free of a continuous thermal overcoat and have graphitic layers, wherein the length of the projection of the graphitic layers on the fibril axis extends along the axis for a distance of at least two fibril diameters and said fibrils are in the form of a fibril mat.
A volume of carbon fibrils comprising a multiplicity of fibrils having a morphology consisting of vermicular tubes that are free of a continuous thermal overcoat and have graphitic layers, wherein the length of the projection of the graphitic layers on the fibril axis extends along the axis for a distance of at least two fibril diameters and said fibrils are adhered to the surface of carbon black.
A composite comprising a matrix reinforced with a volume of carbon fibrils that are vermicular tubes having diameters less than 500 nanometers,
- wherein the amount of said fibril volume in said composite is less than 50 parts per hundred parts composite.
