Cost/performance of VLIW architecture is improved by reducing the number of slots in the instruction issue register.

A write control unit for routing results from functional units of a VLIW processor to a multi-port register file of the VLIW processor, which write control unit comprises
- means for storing result identification information from the functional units;
- and
- means for delaying the result identification information from the functional units according to respective latencies of those functional units.
