Abstract
The present invention relates to coating compositions, systems and methods for coating substrates and, more particularly, metallic substrates with spherosiloxane based coating compositions. The spherosiloxane based compositions are applied utilizing conventional techniques such as chemical vapor deposition such that upon application, the spherosiloxane molecules bond with available oxide molecules provided along the substrate.
Claims15
An article comprising:
- a) a first layer having a surface which includes a metal oxide having oxygen atoms available for bonding;
- and
- b) a second layer in contact with at least a portion of said first layer, said second layer including spherosiloxane molecules having silicon atoms which covalently bond with said oxygen atoms of said metal oxide to form a hydrophobic coating.
An article comprising:
- (a) a first layer which includes metal oxide having oxygen atoms available for bonding and is substantially free of hydrocarbon compounds;
- and
- (b) a second layer in contact with at least a portion of said first layer, said second layer being hydrophobic in nature and having a base unit structure comprised of spherosiloxane molecules having the empirical formula of HSiO.sub.1.5 including silicon atoms which form covalent bonds with said oxygen atoms of said metal oxide.
A coated article comprising:
- (a) a first metallic layer including a surface having a plurality of grain boundaries, said grain boundaries including a concentration of metal oxide having oxygen atoms available for bonding;
- and
- (b) a second layer contacting said first layer at least along said grain boundaries, said second layer including spherosiloxane molecules having silicon atoms which covalently bond with said oxygen atoms of said metal oxide to form a hydrophobic coating.
