Abstract
A discharge lamp with offset or tilted arc tube includes a glass envelope or bulb which surrounds an arc tube. One end of the bulb has a threaded mount for securement into a lamp socket. The arc tube is supported inside the bulb in a position whereby the longitudinal axis of the arc tube is offset from the longitudinal axis of the bulb.
Claims27
A method of operating a high intensity discharge lamp which includes a lamp envelope having a longitudinal axis and an arc tube elongated along a longitudinal axis and mounted inside the lamp envelope comprising:
- positioning the longitudinal axis of the arc tube at an angle between 15 and 45 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the lamp envelope;
- operating the arc lamp in a substantially horizontal position.
A method of retrofitting a conventional lighting fixture which includes a mount to mount the lighting fixture to a supporting structure, a bulb cone connected to the mount, a lamp removably mounted in the bulb cone, a reflector mounted on the bulb cone and generally surrounding a portion of the lamp, the reflector comprising a symmetrical reflector with a central axis, with a lamp which changes the photometrics of the fixture and lamp comprising:
- replacing the existing lamp with a lamp that includes an arc tube, the arc tube having a longitudinal axis angularly disposed between 15 and 45 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the lamp in a manner that in operation the longitudinal axis of the arc tube is held substantially horizontal.
A method of changing the light characteristics of a conventional symmetrical reflector and on-axis, high intensity discharge lamp combination where the longitudinal axis of the arc tube coincides with the longitudinal axis of the lamp comprising:
- replacing the conventional on-axis lamp with an arc lamp with an arc tube having a longitudinal axis that is angled between 15 and 45 degrees from the longitudinal axis of the arc lamp;
- adjusting rotational orientation of the arc lamp to place the longitudinal axis of the arc tube substantially horizontal.
An apparatus for wide area lighting comprising:
- a bulb cone attached to a mounting structure;
- a reflector mounted on the bulb cone;
- an arc lamp having a longitudinal axis and comprising a lamp envelope elongated and generally symmetrical about the longitudinal axis of the arc lamp, an end generally along the longitudinal axis of the arc lamp including an electrical and mounting connection, an arc tube with a longitudinal axis positioned inside the arc lamp, the longitudinal axis of the arc tube being angularly offset between 15 and 45 degrees from the longitudinal axis of the arc lamp;
- the electrical and mounting connection of the arc lamp being removably inserted into the bulb cone;
- the longitudinal axis of the arc lamp, when inserted into the bulb cone extending in a first direction, the longitudinal axis of the arc tube being substantially horizontal.
