Abstract
A process whereby 4-t-butylcyclohexanol with a high content of the cis-isomer, which is useful as a perfume ingredient, can be economically produced on an industrially available scale at a low cost. The process comprises hydrogenating 4-t-butylcyclohexanone by using a specific ruthenium-phosphine complex as a catalyst in the presence of a base containing an alkali metal and an alkylenediamine having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
Claims1
A process for producing cis-4-t-butylcyclohexanol containing at least 95% by weight of the cis-isomer represented by the following formula (II):
- ##STR3## which comprises hydrogenating 4-t-butylcyclohexanone represented by the following formula (I):
- ##STR4## in the presence of (1) a catalyst which is a ruthenium-phosphine complex represented by the following formula (III):
- RuH.sub.a (X.sup.1).sub.b L.sub.c (III)
- wherein X.sup.1 represents a halogen atom or a group represented by R.sup.1 COO, wherein R.sup.1 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a halogenated alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
- L represents an organic phosphine compound;
- a and b are each an integer of from 0 to 2, provided that (a+b) is 2;
- when L is a monodentate ligand, c is an integer of from 3 to 4 and where L is a bidentate ligand, c is an integer of from 1 to 2;
- (2) an alkali metal base or an alkaline earth metal base;
- and (3) an alkylenediamine having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
