A method of synthesizing a diketone of formula (XIII):
- ##STR30## wherein R' is (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl;
- comprising the steps of
- (a) cleaving the oxybridge in the compound of formula (XIV):
- ##STR31## to yield a diketone of formula (XIII).

- ##STR42## wherein R' is (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl, comprising cleaving the oxybridge in the compound of formula (XIV) in the presence of K.sub.2 CO.sub.3 ##STR43## to yield the diketone.
