Abstract
A process is provided for the production and purification of cyclic esters in which the purification includes the introduction of an aqueous solvent into a cyclic ester containing composition and allowing two phases to form. A first phase includes cyclic esters and any organic solvent, and a second phase includes the aqueous solvent and impurities.
Claims16
A process for the purification of cyclic esters in a composition comprising cyclic esters, an organic solvent and impurities, comprising:
- introducing an aqueous solvent into said composition to form a mixture;
- allowing said mixture to separate into a first phase comprising said cyclic esters and organic solvent and a second phase comprising said aqueous solvent and impurities, wherein the amount of aqueous solvent introduced into said composition is less than about 3% based on the weight of the composition above the mutual solubility limit of water in the organic solvent;
- and
- further purifying said cyclic ester in said first phase.
A process for purification of cyclic esters in a composition comprising cyclic esters, an organic solvent and impurities, comprising:
- (a) introducing an aqueous solvent into said composition and allowing said composition to separate into a first phase comprising said cyclic esters and organic solvent and a second phase comprising said aqueous solvent and impurities, wherein the amount of aqueous solvent introduced into said composition is less than about 3% by weight of the composition above the mutual solubility limit of water in the organic solvent;
- and
- (b) contacting said first phase with a first adsorbent to remove impurities.
A process for the purification of cyclic esters in a composition comprising cyclic esters and impurities, wherein said impurities comprise XA composed of a compound selected from the group consisting of a hydroxycarboxylic acid, its ester, salt and amide (X.sub.1 A);
- a linear dimer molecule of X.sub.1 A (X.sub.2 A);
- a linear trimer molecule of X.sub.1 A (X.sub.3 A);
- a linear tetramer molecule of X.sub.1 A (X.sub.4 A);
- a linear pentamer molecule of X.sub.1 A (X.sub.5 A);
- and mixtures thereof, comprising:
- introducing an aqueous solvent into said composition to form a mixture
- allowing said mixture to separate into a first phase comprising said cyclic esters and a second phase comprising said aqueous solvent and impurities, wherein the amount of aqueous solvent introduced into said composition is less than about 3% by weight of the composition above the mutual solubility limit of water in the organic solvent;
- and
- further purifying said cyclic ester in said first phase.
