Abstract
Carbazole can be prepared by dehydrogenation of compounds of the formula ##STR1## or by aminating dehydrogenation of compounds of the formula ##STR2## at 300.degree. to 600.degree. C. in the presence of hydrogen over an iridium catalyst or an iridium-containing catalyst.

A process for the preparation of carbazole by dehydrogenation of a compound of the formula ##STR5## or by aminating dehydrogenation of the compound of the formula ##STR6## at elevated temperature over a noble metal catalyst, wherein said catalyst is an iridium catalyst or an iridium-containing catalyst having an iridium content of 0.01 to 10% by weight, based on the total weight of the catalyst, at a temperature of 300.degree. to 600.degree. C. in the presence of hydrogen.
