Abstract
The present invention relates to (2R,3R,4R)-3,4-dihydroxy-2-hydroxymethylpyrrolidine and other substituted 2-methylpyrrolidines and their use for the treatment of diabetes.
Claims26
A method of treating diabetes, comprising administering to a patient in need of such treatment an effective amount of a compound of formula I ##STR6## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen, acyl, alkene, cycloalkyl or alkyl which optionally is substituted with one or more of the following groups:
- hydroxy, alkoxy, amino, N-alkylamino, N,N-dialkylamino, halogen, cycloalkyl, optionally substituted phenyl or alkoxycarbonyl,
- R.sup.2 is hydrogen,
- R.sup.3 and R.sup.4, which are the same or different, independent of each other, is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, mercapto or amino which is optionally substituted with alkyl or aralkyl, and
- R.sup.5 is alkyl substituted with hydroxy, halogen, amino, N-alkylamino, N,N-dialkylamino or mercapto, or a salt or hydrate thereof.
A method of treating diabetes comprising administering to a subject in need thereof an effective amount of (2R,3R,4R)-3,4-dihydroxy-2-hydroxymethylpyrrolidine.
