Abstract
A puncture and cut resistant fabric comprised of identical platelets and rivets arranged into an array whereby the tops of adjacent platelets are reversed so that tabs on each platelet slidably engage with tabs of each adjacent platelet and are held in engagement by hooks depending from each tab and the rivets placed through apertures formed by the edges of the tabs. The fabric is twistable, bendable, and stretchable. It is constructed of material that will withstand cutting and piercing forces encountered in medical or other environments and is of thin walled construction to allow ease of use.
Claims63
A sheet comprised of a plurality of interconnected platelets spatially and geometrically retained by each other in the absence of attachment to each other.
A fabric comprised of a plurality of platelets arranged in a sheet, each platelet having a tab connected to each edge of each platelet by a connecting means and each adjacent platelet slidably interconnected, so that the platelets are spatially and geometrically retained by each other in the absence of attachment to each other.
A fabric comprised of:
- a. a plurality of platelets arranged in a sheet, each platelet having a tab connected to each edge of each platelet by a connecting means and each adjacent platelet slidably interconnected;
- and
- b. a rivet inserted into each aperture, which aperture is formed by the interconnected tabs of adjacent platelets, to form a flexible array.
A fabric comprised of:
- (a) a plurality of identical platelets comprised of a base, a tab depending from each edge of the base, a hook depending from each tab extending downward at an angle to the plane of the base;
- (b) a plurality of rivets having a pin and a head at each end of the pin;
- (c) the platelets formed into an array of platelets with each of the platelets adjacent to a platelet with the top of the platelet facing upward having the bottom of the platelet facing downward;
- (d) the hooks of the array of platelets interconnected;
- (e) a rivet placed into the aperture formed by the edges of the adjacent tabs with (i) the head of the rivet sized so that it covers substantially the entire area of the aperture when the fabric is fully stretched and does not overlap any other rivet when the fabric is fully compressed, (ii) the pin of the rivet sized so that when the fabric is fully compressed it is substantially the same size as the aperture, (iii) the length of the rivet sized so that the hooks of adjacent platelets do not disengage in a direction perpendicular to the fabric, and (iv) the cross-section of the pin of the rivet sized so that adjacent platelets do not disengage in a direction transverse to the tabs when the fabric is fully stretched.
A sheet comprised of an interdependent array of platelets that are spatially and geometrically retained in relationship to each other in the absence of attachment to each other.
A method of protecting a surface from punctures, pierces and cuts comprising the steps of:
- a) forming a fabric comprised of an array of interconnected platelets spatially and geometrically retained by each other in the absence of mechanical attachment to each other;
- and
- b) covering the surface to be protected with the fabric.
A method of making a sheet for protecting a surface from punctures, pierces, and cuts comprising the steps of:
- a. forming a plurality of platelets having means for interconnection with each other;
- and
- b. assembling the platelets into an interdependent array, such that the platelets are spatially retained in relationship to each other in the absence of attachment to each other.
Dependencies are inferred from the claim text.
