Abstract
A method for fabricating a multi-domain liquid crystal cell is disclosed, wherein first and second alignment directions are formed in first and second portions of an alignment layer provided on a substrate by selectively subjecting the first and second portions to different energy doses of linearly polarized ultraviolet light. Liquid crystal material is then injected between the one substrate and another substrate and into contact with the alignment layer, thereby obtaining a wide viewing angle in the liquid crystal device.
Claims30
A method for controlling an alignment direction in a liquid crystal (LC) cell, comprising the steps of:
- providing a photosensitive alignment layer, wherein when said photosensitive alignment layer is subjected to an energy dose, said alignment layer aligns in a first alignment direction if said energy dose is within a first predetermined energy dose range and aligns in a second, different alignment direction if said energy dose is within a second predetermined energy dose range, said second predetermined energy dose range is different than said first predetermined energy dose range;
- subjecting a first portion of said photosensitive alignment layer to a first energy dose within said first predetermined energy dose range to impart said first alignment direction in said first portion of said photosensitive alignment layer;
- and
- subjecting a second portion of said alignment layer to a second energy dose within said second predetermined energy dose range to impart said second alignment direction in said second portion of said photosensitive alignment layer.
A method for fabricating a multi-domain liquid crustal (LC) cell, comprising the steps of:
- providing a first substrate coated with a first alignment layer, wherein when said first alignment layer is subjected to an energy dose, said first alignment layer aligns in a first alignment direction if said energy dose is within a first predetermined energy dose range and aligns in a second, different alignment direction if said energy dose is within a second predetermined energy dose range, said second predetermined energy dose range is different than said first predetermined energy dose range;
- subjecting a first region of said first alignment layer to a first energy dose within said first predetermined energy dose range to impart said first alignment direction;
- subjecting a second region of said first alignment layer to a second energy dose within said second predetermined energy dose range to impart said second alignment direction;
- providing a second substrate coated with a second alignment layer;
- positioning said first substrate adjacent said second substrate such that said first and second alignment layers face one another;
- and
- injecting LC material between said first and second substrates.
A method for storing information in a photosensitive layer comprising the steps of:
- providing said photosensitive layer, wherein when said photosensitive layer is subjected to a dose of radiation, said photosensitive layer aligns in a first orientation if said energy dose is within a first predetermined energy dose range and aligns in a second, different orientation if said dose of radiation is within a second predetermined energy dose range, said second predetermined energy dose range is different than said first predetermined energy dose range;
- exposing a first portion of said photosensitive layer to a first dose of radiation corresponding to a first information, wherein said first dose of radiation imparts said first orientation in said first portion of said photosensitive layer;
- and
- exposing a second portion of said photosensitive layer to a second dose of radiation corresponding to a second information, wherein said second dose of radiation imparts said second orientation in said second portion of said photosensitive layer.
A method for controlling an alignment direction in LC cell, comprising the steps of:
- providing a photosensitive alignment layer, wherein when said photosensitive alignment layer is subjected to an energy dose, said alignment layer aligns in a first alignment direction if said energy dose is within a first predetermined energy dose range and aligns in a second, different alignment direction if said energy dose is within a second predetermined energy dose range, said second predetermined energy dose range is different than said first predetermined energy dose range;
- subjecting said photosensitive alignment layer to a first energy dose within said first energy dose range to impart said first alignment direction;
- and
- subjecting said photosensitive alignment layer to a second energy dose to shift the first alignment direction to said second alignment direction, wherein the sum of the first and second energy doses is within said second energy dose range.
A method for controlling an alignment direction in a liquid crystal (LC) cell, comprising:
- providing a photosensitive alignment layer, wherein when said photosensitive alignment layer is subjected to an energy dose, said alignment layer aligns in a first alignment direction if said energy dose is within a first predetermined energy dose range and aligns in a second, different alignment direction if said energy dose is within a second predetermined energy dose range, said second predetermined energy dose range is different than said first predetermined energy dose range;
- and
- subjecting a first portion and a second portion of said photosensitive alignment layer respectively to a first energy dose within said first predetermined energy dose range and a second, different energy dose within said second predetermined energy dose range to impart respectively said first alignment direction and said second, different alignment direction in said first and second portions of said photosensitive alignment layer.
