Abstract
The present invention describes liquid crystal compounds which are suitable for use in liquid crystal devices including those which exploit the electroclinic effect.
Claims15
An optically active compound of formula I:
- ##STR21## wherein A, B, C, D are independently selected from any of phenyl, pyridine, pyrimidine, cyclohexyl, or substituted phenyl and at least one of the cyclohexyl groups:
- ##STR22## must be present:
- wherein X is any one of OH, OR.sub.3, R.sub.3, CH.sub.2 OR.sub.3, F, Cl, OCF.sub.3, CF.sub.3, CH.sub.2 F, CHF.sub.2, or CN, where R.sub.3 is C.sub.1-5 alkyl and may itself contain a chiral centre;
- R.sub.1 is C.sub.1-16 straight or branched chain alkyl or alkoxy and may contain a chiral centre;
- R.sub.2 is C.sub.1-16 straight or branched chain alkyl or alkoxy and may contain a chiral centre or R.sub.2 is H;
- substituted phenyl is given by the formula:
- ##STR23## wherein Y is individually selected from F, Cl or CN and y is 1-4;
- X.sub.1, and X.sub.2, and X.sub.3 are single bond;
- b and c are independently 0 or 1;
- provided that at least one of A, B, C or D is substituted phenyl wherein Y is F.

A compound having formula I ##STR31## wherein A, B, C, D are independently selected from any of phenyl, pyridine, pyrimidine, cyclohexyl, or substituted phenyl and at least one of the cyclohexyl groups:
- ##STR32## must be present:
- wherein X is any one of OH, OR.sub.3, R.sub.3, CH.sub.2 OR.sub.3, F, Cl, OCH.sub.3, CF.sub.3 CHF.sub.3, or CN, where R.sub.3 is C.sub.1-5 alkyl and may itself contain a chiral centre;
- R.sub.1 is C.sub.1-16 straight or branched chain alkyl or alkoxy and may contain a chiral centre;
- R.sub.2 is C.sub.1-16 straight or branched chain alkyl or alkoxy and may contain a chiral centre or R.sub.2 is H;
- substituted phenyl is given by the formula;
- ##STR33## wherein Y is individually selected from F, Cl or CN, and y is 1-4;
- X.sub.1, and X.sub.2, and X.sub.3 are single bond;
- b and c are independently 0 or 1;
- provided that when X is OMe or CN then there are at least 3 rings present provided that at least one of A, B, C or D is substituted phenyl wherein Y is F.
