A circuit within an integrated circuit device comprising:
- a protection circuit coupled to an internal power supply and an external power supply, said internal power supply providing an internal voltage, said external power supply providing an external voltage, wherein said protection circuit is operable to reduce said external voltage for internal circuits within said integrated circuit device, and has associated therewith a maximum terminal voltage difference, which, if exceeded, causes failure of said protection circuit;
- and
- a pass circuit coupled between said protection circuit and said internal power supply, said internal voltage being lower than said external voltage, and wherein said pass circuit is operable to reduce a terminal voltage difference across said protection circuit in the event of a failure of said internal power supply.
