Abstract
Methods for treating adult-onset diabetes and inducing weight loss are presented. An effective amount of pokeweed mitogen containing a chloroform precipitable fraction is administered to a mammal to treat adult-onset diabetes. Weight loss is induced by administering effective amount of pokeweed mitogen containing a chloroform precipitable fraction or Momordica lectin to induce a decline in food intake in a mammal.

A method of inducing weight loss in a mammal in need thereof comprising administering to said mammal a lectin selected from the group) consisting of pokeweed mitogen containing a chloroform precipitatable fraction and Momordica lectin in an amount effective to induce a decline in food intake in said mammal and continuing said administering step to maintain the decline in food intake.
A method of treating adult-onset diabetes in a mammal in need thereof comprising administering to said mammal pokeweed mitogen containing a chloroform precipitatable fraction in an amount effective to induce a decline in food intake and induce hypoglycemia in said mammal.
A method of inducing weight loss in a mammal in need thereof comprising administering to said mammal a lectin selected from the group consisting of pokeweed mitogen containing a chloroform precipitatable fraction and Momordica lectin in an amount effective to induce a decline in food intake in said mammal without inducing hypoglycemia.
