Abstract
4-Methyl-2-pentanol cannot be separated from 3-methyl-1-butanol by distillation because of the closeness of their boiling points. 4-Methyl-2-pentanol can be easily separated from 3-methyl-1-butanol by extractive distillation. Effective agents are dodecane, dimethylformamide and dimethylsulfoxide.
Claims2
A method for recovering 3-methyl-1-butanol from a mixture of 3-methyl-1-butanol and 4-methyl-2-pentanol which consist essentially of distilling a mixture consisting of 3-methyl-1-butanol and 4-methyl-2-pentanol in the presence of an extractive agent, recovering the 3-methyl-1-butanol as overhead product and obtaining the 4-methyl-2-pentanol and the extractive agent as bottoms product, wherein said extractive agent is dodecane or dimethylformamide.
