Abstract
A process for the preparation of the antibacterial compound ##STR1## or a salt thereof which comprises hydrogenolysis of the novel compound of formula (II) ##STR2## and if necessary or desired isolating the resultant carboxylic acid as a salt thereof.

In a process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I) ##STR10## wherein the improvement comprises obtaining a compound of formula (II) in solid form ##STR11## followed by hydrogenolysis of the compound of formula (II) and optionally converting the thus obtained carboxylic acid into a salt thereof.
