Disclosed is the family of genes responsible for the neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Methods and compounds for the diagnosis, prevention, and therapy of the disease are also disclosed.

A method of treating a patient with a neurodegenerative disease caused by a mutant superoxide dismutase (SOD)-encoding gene, said method comprising administering to said patient a SOD polypeptide, in an amount effective to reduce the symptoms of said disease in said patient.
A method of treating a patient with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), said method comprising administering to said patient a SOD polypeptide, in an amount effective to reduce the symptoms of said disease in said patient.
